Direkte Methoden sind solche, die die Ernährung einer betreffenden Person direkt betreffen. Sie lassen sich in zwei prinzipiell verschiedene Arten einteilen. In solche, die die vergangene Nahrungsaufnahme (retrospektive Methoden) erfragen - das sind Interviewmethoden - und,
in solche, die den gegenwärtigen Verzehr registrieren (prospektive Methoden), das sind z.B. Protokollmethoden u.a. (Abbildung).
