Vorher am 11.2.2011 den “Global status report on alcohol and health", der deutlich zeigt, dass durch übermäßigen Alkoholkonsum hohe Schäden auftreten. Weltweit sind fast 4% alles Todesfälle auf Alkohol zurückzuführen (meistens durch Unfälle und Gewalt; 9% bei jungen Menschen (15-29y), 6% bei Männern, 1% bei Frauen. Daneben werden Schäden durch erhöhte Krankheitsraten (Arbeitsunfähigkeiten) registriert (z.B. Leberzirrhose, Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen, Krebs). Die WHO publiziert dazu für nahezu alle Länder spezifische Berichte. Stat.Bundesamt (24.062014):Im Jahr 2012 verstarben in Deutschland 14 551 Personen (10 922 Männer und 3 629 Frauen) an den Folgen übermäßigen Alkoholkonsums. Damit kamen fast viermal mehr Menschen durch die legale Droge Alkohol als durch einen Verkehrsunfall (insgesamt 3 827 Personen) ums Leben. Haupttodesursachen der in Folge Alkoholkonsums Verstorbenen waren die Alkoholische Leberkrankheit (beispielsweise Leberzirrhose) mit 8 319 Fällen sowie die Psychischen und Verhaltensstörungen durch Alkohol (beispielsweise durch das Abhängigkeitssyndrom) mit 4 991 Fällen.
